Occasion: This is a sermon at a church where I had a consulting relationship.
Title: The Biology of Sin

Galatians 5:16-17
16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.
They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

-Well, for some of you, it might have been surprising to realize that after you became a Christian, you still kept on sinning!

the phrase:  Sin nature
          -in the original Greek is the word: flesh

-now, it is true that Jesus saves us from sin

And this sin nature in us… is ALIVE

-it’s important that we see sin this way

Genesis 4

          -that word “crouching”….is a word a SCARY word in the original Hebrew

Sin is alive

-Martin Luther himself struggled with this:
-and he wrote about such constant struggle in a personal diary.  He wrote:"When I was a monk, I often thought that I must be lost when I felt an evil temptation.  Then undertook I many kinds of discipline, confessed every day, and yet it all helped me nothing.  For the same temptations evermore recurred; therefore tormented I myself perpetually with such thoughts.  “See, there you have committed such and such a sin,....therefore there is no help for you, all your good works are come to nothing.”….Had I then rightly understood St. Paul's words I would not have tormented myself, as I am now wont to do."     

-I think of how quickly and seriously we respond to physical problems

-we must move quickly and definitively…

-Galatians 5:16….God says… “live by the Spirit”
