Occasion: This is a marriage workshop done for a church where I have a consulting relationship.
Title: Sex - Biblical Principles

Principle 3. Sex has the dual purpose of procreation and intimacy
-first of all, sex has a dual purpose
-there are those who believe that sex is only for reproduction
-this is based on their view that sex apart from reproduction is sinful
-both purposes must be acknowledged
-second of all, sex can be done with only ONE purpose in mind
-you are NOT required to always have both purposes in mind
-you can have sex for the sole purpose of reproduction
-you can have sex for the sole purpose of intimacy
-because sex without producing children is a form of birth control
5 Basic Principles of Birth Control
1. Sex for the sole purpose of intimacy and pleasure is birth control!
-this is mentioned in the introduction: excerpt from another workshop on the biblical principles of sex (principle #3)
1 Cor.7:2-4
2But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.
-that you can have sex without having children
-this biblical principle allows for birth control
-so, if you use certain methods to prevent conception, it’s ok
-now, we will talk later about the biblical principles behind prevention
-but right now, we are establishing the simple fact that the concept of prevention is permitted
-meaning, you are physically stopping conception somehow
2. Faithfulness in raising the children should be considered before having children
-there are those who believe that all forms of birth control are wrong because we are playing God
-that if God wants us to have children, He will give us children
-so, we should freely have sex and see what happens
-but this is irresponsible
-God calls us to be faithful in providing for our family
-we should seriously consider the ramification of having children
-and if we control the number of children because of this, this is being faithful
-this is my main reason for NOT having a 4th child
-I am just too busy raising 3 children
-yes, children are a blessing from God
-but God also tells us to be faithful in raising them
Cf. Psalm 127:3
Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.
-the word “heritage” in the original Hebrew is “Promised Land”
-children are like the promised land
-meaning, God gave you the land, you must take care of the land. You must be faithful to the land
-so with children you have to be faithful to what He gives
-we need to be responsible
1 Tim. 5:8
If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
-it would not be right to bring children into the world and then neglect their provision
-materially and spiritually
* birth control is a form of stewardship in the family !
3. Physical complications are a major factor in birth control
Genesis 3:16
To the woman he said,
"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
-speaks of the complications and challenges of child birth
-some are not physically capable of having children
-some are major physical problems when they are pregnant
-morning sickness
-hyperemasis gravadara
-leads to hospitable and the threat of death
-the age of the mother and father
-birth complications related to age must be considered
-downs syndrome
-threat to the mother’s life is a factor
4. PRE-fertilization methods are permitted by God
-the bible teaches that life is created at the moment of conception
Psalm 139:13-14
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
-once an egg is fertilized, it is life and must be treated as life
-abortion is wrong....murder
-but any form of birth control that prevents fertilization is ok
-PREVENTION is permissible
-meaning, preventing the fertilization is permissible
-this is your guiding principle
PRE-fertilization methods are ok
5. POST-fertilization methods are NOT permitted by God
-once an egg is fertilized, it is life
-any form of POST fertilization methods is a killing of life
