Title: The Healing of the Leper
Commentary: This sermon is part of an ongoing verse by verse series in the book of Matthew, starting in chapter 8
Main Scripture: Matthew 8:1-4
Main Topics: miracles, healing, Jesus, leper, leprosy, the power and authority of Jesus
As you listen, select, copy, and paste the following outline:
A man with leprosy…
-I read a summary account of leprosy from medical missionaries
-but to make matters worse, society rejected the leper
-there were strict quarantine regulations against the leper
-when people saw lepers, they ran
-BUT THIS LEPER [Matt.8:2] …..is NOT afraid
-he runs up to Jesus and kneels before him….
-v.2
…and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."
knelt
-lit. “bowed down”
Lord
if you are willing
you can make me clean."
-and to everyone’s surprise….Jesus reaches out….and touches the leper
"I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"
-by saying this, I believe Jesus is making 3 huge statements
1. that He will minister to those whom Israel will not…..
2. that Jesus has the authority over all things created
3. that Jesus is the long awaited Messiah
v.4….then Jesus says something surprising…
See that you don't tell anyone
-Mark 1:45
45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
-instead Jesus says…in v.4
But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded
-and the leper, now a new man….shall be a living testimony (v.4) to them
