Title: The Response of John's Disciples
Commentary: This is a surprising situation as the disciples of John the Baptist have not yet converted over to Jesus and question Him. Read Matthe 4:12 which explains that John was in prison during this time when his disciples confront Jesus (another sermon below explains this).
Main Scripture: Matthew 9:14-17
As you listen, select, copy, and paste the following outline:
Matthew 9:14-17
14 Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"
15 Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
16 "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17 Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."
-a growing resistance to Jesus
-various groups respond with accusations towards Jesus
9:3 – the scribes accuse Him of blasphemy
9:11 – the pharisees accuse Him of immorality
[today] 9:14 John’s disciples accuse Him of slacking in godliness
9:34 the pharissees accuse Him of working with Satan
*Matthew is saying: the resistance is comprehensive
John's disciples
-John, here,…. is John the Baptist
14….[they ask] him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"
-their question reveals 2 things
1. Scripture is not mentioned
2. They connect themselves to the Pharisees
Things you don’t do #1: Don’t fast at weddings, v.15
15 Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?
-the disciples of John saw their time as a time of fasting
-Jesus’ answer runs deep
-contrast to John’s disciples, Jesus saw the situation as a wedding
-this is no random illustration:
-in the OT, God was repeatedly described as a bridegroom
-Isaiah 54:5-6; 62:4-5; Hosea 2:16-20
-the union of God and His people was repeatedly described as a wedding celebration
-Jesus picks up on it in various places like Matt.22:2
-where He says that the kingdom of heaven is like a wedding banquet
-the Apostle Paul who is an OT theologian…picks up on
that same wedding analogy…between God and His people
-He says in v.14….
The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
Now, #2 & #3 are similar and so I will group them together
#2: new patch on old garment, v.16
16 "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
#3: new wine in old wineskin, v.17
17 Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."
* where is our heart?
* Who is Jesus to us?

Listen to the following sermon which explains that John the Baptist was in prison right before the launch of Jesus' ministry in Galilee (Matthew 4:12). And so, the disciples of John confront Jesus while John is in prison.
