Operation: Create gender responsibility (part 2)

A man is like Christ when he protects his woman
         -what does this mean?
-it is the inner sense that he must protect her from harm

-now, we find that manly principle embedded in Ephesians 5.
-it is implicit in the analogy of Christ and the church
        -how Christ protects the church

* the clearest passage for protection is Eph.5:23
The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
Savior:  The Gk verb:  to save
-involves keeping someone safe and sound
                 -rescuing from danger
                 -saving the person from judgment
-this is how Christ is to the church
2 Thess.3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

And these dangers…
Think about all the dangers in this world
-the man is the defender of the weak
-he surveys these dangers and formulates a plan to protect those put under his care
-in your discussion time, you can generate a list of danger areas
-some danger zones will be common to all women and children in your life
-but each family will have its own particular dangers
-the man is the defender who is aware of the enemy
-ignorance of the enemy makes the protector weak
        -he must not be so

-again, it’s not because she is absolutely helpless
-but the man is called to be a protector
-as God has made him stronger….generally speaking
         -check out 1 Peter 3:7
-it speaks of the woman as a “weaker vessel” (KJV)
-it means that she is physically weaker
-weaker – is a comparative term
-she is not weak….she is weaker
-implies that the husband is strongER
-and biblically speaking, the stronger must protect the weaker

-in fact, as he approaches her as the weaker partner, he must also treat her as something delicate and precious
-treat them with respect as the weaker partner
-“treat them with respect” = honor (in the original Greek)
-….you show her respect and honor her

-the single man can look to Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one   another above yourselves.
-the single man can treat all women with respect and honor
-and showing this kind of respect and honor and treating her as something precious…that’s a big problem for men
         -respecting and honoring them….protecting them

-this is the Christian man’s statement in a world of abuse

-for history is a long story of abusive and disrespect
                     -the repression of women….devaluing them
                     -treating them as objects

A man is like Christ when he protects his woman
          -all women….

-I am reminded of that manly man, Boaz in the book of Ruth
-in chapter 3:9, Ruth, who has become a widow
…and is an foreigner, a Moabite….not a very prestigious lineage….going back to the illegitimate son of Lot….out of desperation…finds Boaz and asks him to cover her
-she asks in v.9  “spread the corner of your garment over me…”
        -she is asking for protection
-a poor helpless widow in a foreign land…there is danger all around
-literally in the Hebrew means to spread your wing over me

-Ruth needed to be protected….God had a great plan for her life as she was to become the great grandmother of King David….so, she is part of the royal line of David from which the messiah comes

-and the man must follow this example of Jesus in the way he protects his woman
-as God has great plans for women….like Ruth
-and God will use men to protect and take care of them so that they can reach their full potential

-but the man who is a protector quickly transitions into the man who is the provider

* A man is like Christ when he provides for his woman
-for to act like a man is to act like a provider
-it is the natural transition from protector

-note the quick transition from protector to provider in the story of Ruth and Boaz

-back in the first session, where we learned about the man as a manager in
1 Timothy 3:4a He must manage his own family well
         -we examined the adverb “well”
-and saw that it had a 2 pronged meaning
-that it meant both internal wellness and external wellness
-back in that message, we looked at the internal wellness
