Introduction
Tips on Reading Parables
2. Understand its double function:
To reveal and to conceal
3. Find the main point
The 3 parts
-vs.1-9 the parable itself
-vs.10-17 the purpose of parables
-vs.18-23 the meaning of the parable
18"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:
Soil #1 = Calloused heart: v.4, 19
Eph.6:12
Soil #2 = impulsive heart: vs.5-6, 20-21
Matthew 8:18-22
1 John 2:19
Soil #3 = divided heart, vs.7, 22
Rich young man, Matthew 19
Soil #4 = good heart
-it is all about the soil
2 reasons why Jesus explains so much (the main point: tip #3)
1. Jesus wants to explain the reality of diverse responses
2. Jesus is preparing them to be sowers of the gospel
Yes, there are many kinds of soils, but ultimately, there is ONE God who opens our hearts so that we might see Him
-many soils…but one God
-He is the Master Gardener who cultivates our hearts that we might receive him
-we learned that in part 2 vs.10-17 when the disciples asked why he spoke in parables….
-remember tip.#2: double function of reveal and to conceal
-the opening and closing of hearts is in His hands…
-for some reason….our eyes and hearts have been opened…
-by His grace, we now see….
-all because He chose to come to us FIRST and love us
