Wisdom in Communication: The Art of Interpreting the Situation

Wisdom is needed in communication

-here’s an overview of the word “wisdom”
-and you just may be surprised where you find the word

Exodus 35:25
Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun-blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen.

Exodus 28:3
Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.

Exodus 35:31-32
and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze…

Exodus 36:1

-you get the point…there are many more examples, but let’s stop here
-it’s been a interesting display of images
-from seamstresses who know how to work with yarn
            -to garment makers
            -to stone cutters
-to….really….every job out there that requires skill
-God is the one who gives the skill to do such work

*wisdom is a _________

*wisdom is the skill of ___________ God’s word to a specific situation

-and this skill that God gives to us…are like gifts that God gives…

How and when to use your skills…
Proverbs 26:4, 5
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
or you will be like him yourself.

5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
or he will be wise in his own eyes.

-wisdom involves reading your situation

Timing in Communication: The Art of Finding the Right Time to Speak

-let’s start with…a one liner
* When communicating, the content must match the ______________

Click: the content can be ___________, but the context can be ____________

-but Scripture is much more sensitive
Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  NIV
-see that phrase:  “according to their needs”?
-I like how the NAS…the New American Standard translates it that phrase
NAS  Eph.4:29  “…according to the need of the moment…”
-because in the original Greek, it literally means…meeting the needs of a specific moment
-what is absolutely necessary for that one particular moment
-and so, the Christian is to be sensitive to the need of…the moment
                        -not every moment is….the moment

-the moment = a time when the communication meets their needs and fits the situation

-there are many moments in your day, where you are not ready to hear it

-the bottom line is that you have to be sensitive to…the moment

The book of Proverbs teaches about such wisdom
-but wise words….spoken at the right time
A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver   Proverbs 25:11

                        -Proverbs 15:23
-A man has joy in an apt answer,
And how delightful is a timely word!

-Proverbs 27:14
He who blesses his friend with a loud voice early in the morning, It will be reckoned a curse to him.

-here’s another one of poor timing!
Proverbs 25:20
Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day…
Is he who sings songs to a troubled heart.

                        -your spouse gets sad….depressed….and troubled

-some people are so insensitive

-some guys are like drill sergeants

Sound of Music

Prov. 15:28
The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,
But the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

-many times you have to WAIT for the right situation
-the classic example in the Bible of this kind of waiting comes from
2 Samuel 11:26f

The emphasis on finding the right time to speak can be balanced with the following teaching on speedy reconciliation
